What is Matcha?

Matcha is a type of green tea made from young tea leaves. Match tea leaves are specially grown to make this unique tea. The plant is left in the shade for several weeks to help increase the caffeine levels and improve the flavor of the tea. Once ready to harvest, the baby leaves are ground into a super fine, green powder. The powder is so fine that it dissolves in water almost immediately. Matcha is typically whisked into hot water to create a frothy, latte like drink.

What Does Matcha Taste Like?

On it’s own, matcha has a bright, slightly bitter taste. It can also taste a little bit grassy or vegetal. If you have ever had unsweetened green tea, this is exactly what matcha is like! Matcha is typically sweetened or paired with another, sweet ingredient to help it taste less bitter. It goes well with tropical tastes and is often paired with pineapple, mango, coconut or citrus flavors.

Is Matcha Healthy?

Matcha contains lots of natural antioxidants called catechins. These antioxidants have been linked to improved heart health, helping with type two diabetes and even preventing cancer. Matcha has been shown to increase energy levels, boost concentration and even help improve your mood. Everyone would be happy with a delicious matcha latte in their hands!

The matcha lattes you get in most coffee shops are made with matcha powder that is pre-mixed with sugar. While this sure tastes good, it does take away from the health benefits of the drink. Too much added sugar isn’t always good.

Our homemade matcha latte recipe uses honey and the natural sweetness of pineapple juice to make the delicious drink. It is a healthier option and tastes even better than a store bought matcha latte!

Ingredients in Pineapple Matcha

We stick to simple ingredients in our pineapple matcha latte. Here is what we use to make our tasty, tropical green tea:

Water– to help dissolve the matcha powder and dilute the strong natural flavor of the tea.

Matcha Powder– Be sure to chose premium culinary grade matcha or ceremonial grade matcha which has the best flavor.

Pineapple Juice– Look for pineapple juice that has no added sugars. Make your own by pureeing fresh pineapple and straining it.

Fresh Ginger- Peel the ginger before grating

Honey- Honey or maple syrup will work well to sweeten the matcha tea latte

Coconut Milk- We like using canned coconut milk which is creamier thanks to the natural fat of the coconut. You can use any kind of dairy free milk or dairy milk as well. If you replace the milk, you may want to add a little more honey to the tea latte.

All of the ingredients are blended together to make a frothy, foamy latte that is irresistible. It is easy enough to make in the morning to give you the energy you need to start your day. It is also tasty enough to enjoy as a sweet treat in the afternoon. We know you will fall in love with this green, healthy, tropical pineapple matcha. Enjoy!
