  1. Freeze the banana and cherries. The frozen fruit makes the drink cold and thick without diluting the flavor. You’ll be able to use less ice or skip the ice completely if all your fruit is frozen.
  2. Don’t be afraid to blend. Blend the smoothie for at least one minute. The longer it blends, the smoother it will be.
  3. Get fancy with the garnishes. Top your smoothie with some whipped cream and a chocolate covered cherry. Add some grated chocolate to the top. Make it as fancy as you’d like!
  4. Use dairy free milk and yogurt. We like almond milk and oat milk yogurt which is thick and creamy.

Ingredients

  • 1 banana

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt

  • 1 cup frozen cherries (pitted)

  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 Tbsp ground flaxseeds

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 Tbsp honey

  • 1 cup ice

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • Fresh cherries for garnish

Directions

  • Place all of the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth.
  • Pour into two large glasses and garnish with a fresh cherry and some chocolate shavings.

Even though the authentic recipe calls for Mexican Chocolate tabillas(chocolate tablets) I have used only the chocolate chips that I got from my local grocery stores. For a slight spice, I have used paprika and cinnamon powder.

  • Mix all the chocolate ingredients – In a saucepan with medium heat, pour milk and add chocolate chips and cocoa powder. Mix well until everything dissolves
  • Add in the spices and sugar – Now add the paprika, cinnamon powder, and brown sugar. Mix and cook until the mixture turns thick
  • Introduce the vanilla essence – Finally, add in the vanilla essence and give a good mix. Remove the hot chocolate from the heat and it is ready to serve

  • Warm the Milk – In a saucepan with low medium heat, pour the milk and warm it for 2 to 3 minutes
