  • Chocolate Chips – I have used semi sweetened chocolate chips but you can also use dark chocolate bars or other semi sweet chocolates
  • Cocoa Powder – Unsweetened Cocoa powder works well for this recipe
  • Condensed Milk – Gives rich flavor to your drink
  • Vanilla Essence – To enhance the flavor of the drink
  • Spices – Paprika or chili powder and cinnamon powder delivers a perfect warmness and heat to your drink
  • Milk – I have used full fat milk here, but you can also use non-dairy milk like almond milk, oat milkor others for a vegan friendly version of this drink
  • Sweetener – Even though authentic recipe calls for palm sugar, I have used brown sugar here. And you can also feel free to use sweeteners of your preferences

How to make Mexican Hot Chocolate?

I have made this homemade Mexican Hot Chocolate with semi-sweetened chocolate and unsweetened cocoa powder. Even though the authentic recipe calls for Mexican Chocolate tabillas(chocolate tablets) I have used only the chocolate chips that I got from my local grocery stores. For a slight spice, I have used paprika and cinnamon powder.

  • Mix all the chocolate ingredients – In a saucepan with medium heat, pour milk and add chocolate chips and cocoa powder. Mix well until everything dissolves
  • Add in the spices and sugar – Now add the paprika, cinnamon powder, and brown sugar. Mix and cook until the mixture turns thick
  • Introduce the vanilla essence – Finally, add in the vanilla essence and give a good mix. Remove the hot chocolate from the heat and it is ready to serve
  • Serve – Once the drink reaches your desired drinking temperature, serve this hot and spicy Mexican hot chocolate with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon powder
